9/19/2023 0 Comments Choosy programmers choose gifThere were no/few good portable graphics formats. People wanted to share pictures, display online-shopping catalogs, weather maps, etc. The information service was moving beyond a text-based, menu-driven system (I like curses and termcap as much as the next guy, but hey.). In the world of the mid 80s there were IBM PCs, Apple Macs (classic), Amigas, Atari-STs, CoCos, and yes, Apple-IIs and Commodor-68s. It’s often the incidentals that you are remembered for. Things that got out GIFīe careful what you do and say. Single-handed technical virtuosity could not fix the one that didn’t.Īnd there was this little side project called GIF. He was also pulled into the WOW project which was supposed to be the AOL killer when it became apparent that /CompuServe needed an AOL killer./ One of those projects succeeded. Later on (after my time) Steve as pulled into major projects to support the back end processing for H&R Blocks’s TaxCut program when online tax-filing was a new thing. Marketing did not want to release my web browser. Somewhere in there, there was a graphics library and enough pieces that I was able to write a web browser that worked inside WinCIM, that would have allowed CompuServe users without an Internet connection (most everyone then) to browse the web. He later used that as the substrate for WinCIM, the graphical interface to the information service that he created which kept the company going for a while in the face of the likes of AOL. This was all in an environment where 9600 baud modems were considered “fast”. On top of that, Steve created the HMI (Host Micro Interface) protocol that rode on top of CompuServe “B-Protocol” to allow API driven interactions with the information service (the alternative being text/command line interfaces). There were ports and hacks to various tools such as FINE (Fine Is Not Emacs), a C compiler, DEC Runoff, laser printer support, source code control systems, etc. There was a full-fledged database system written in there somewhere I think. I worked on BTOOLS, and SKIMAN (Single Key Index Access Manager), a B-Tree library Steve had created. These were partially in support of CompuServe’s pre-information-service time-sharing services supported by a homegrown packet-switched networking. He had just /given up on writing at DEC10 ADA compiler/ (Steve is still writing ADA software), and was just beginning to embrace PCs as “real computers” worthy of his attention, had written a FORTRAN compiler, a BASIC compiler and associated run-time systems, and a run-time library for BLISS called BTOOLS. Steve ran the languages and tools group when I arrived. I’m sure there was much more that I missed. My view of his programming output comes largely from 1985-1995. I was fortunate enough to start my career working with/for him. Steve worked at CompuServe (and successors) from 1970 to 2001. I was privileged to have a front row seat to watch a master at work.Īdapted from a blog post I wrote after the CompuServe 50th Anniversary Reunion. Steve Wilhite is best remembered as the creator of GIF, but he spent 30 years writing piles of amazing software which helped set the stage for the Web.

Version 6.0 incorporates many (many) new features and improvements. My two cents: I like Cheetah, but you cannot seriously compare it with Blender.Just a few days ago, the highly anticipated 6.0 version of Cheetah3D was released. Note that the fbx exporter for Blender was a direct order from UT guys to one of the best Blender developers out there, and it simply rocks. You cannot say the same of Cheetah.Īnd the Blender integration with Untity is just perfect, I would say it is just the best currently available, better than with Maya, 3dMax or Cheetah. Beginning by a good set of animation tools (try to animate a simple walk in Cheetah and you will understand), a much better UV mapping, tons of tutorials about anything you could need to learn, and a very strong and quick developing process which has turned it into a really competent 3D suit, currently comparable to any other profesional animation tool. But it lacks a lot of other usefull features Blender offers (yes, also for game work). And I think Cheetah is a nice subdivision modeller, and now it has also a nice renderer. And if you are beginning with 3D, Maya or 3dMax UIs are equally odd, difficult and un-intuitive as Blender's one. Well, IMHO, if you don´t know how an aplication works, your opinion about it is not very informative, nor usefull. Almost all the criticism you can read about Blender begin saying "I never could pass the odd UI.". The cheetah gang is very quick and active in this forum, as you allready should have noticedīut the truth is that Blender is a much more robust and mature 3D aplication, and his integration with Unity is much better than the cheetah one. Unity is a great tool, but keep in mind that if you aren't readily prepared for the complexities of working with 3D content, it'll be very easy to find yourself getting lost within it and discouraged by it. (This is something I actually do myself.) Once you understand the tools and have a working prototype, it'll make bridging the gap into 3D through Unity a much simpler process. This will give you a chance to flesh out your basic game concepts while you're learning more about the basics of 3D animation and modeling. If you have some idea for a game, you might want to try using something like Flash as a means of creating a working prototype before jumping directly into Unity. Am I correct in assuming you have some experience with Flash in some form? In the meanwhile, you mentioned you've used Swift3D before. Such concepts may prove vital when you start bridging over into apps like Unity, where you actually interact with the content you've created. It's not too expensive, there's a lot of great 3rd party support for the software and the software itself is a good introduction to working with important 3D modeling and animation concepts. Personally, I've been a fan of software like Carrara Studio Pro from DAZ Productions. The documentation tends to be better and the interfaces are less taxing on the mind. If you are literally just starting out in 3D, you might be better off using a more polished commercial, consumer-level 3D package. A number of the tools within Cheetah 3D aren't quite as intuitive as the could be, which often leaves you with a number of head-scratching "what do I do now?" situations. If anything, the problems you'll likely get stuck on are with Cheetah3D itself. Well, Cheetah3D does work well with Unity in a number of areas. |
